The third research focus of HoLMiR looks into the genetics of farm animals and their microbiome. This is based on the knowledge that the composition of microorganisms in the gut of farm animals is also influenced by hereditary.
The aim is to develop innovative breeding concepts for livestock breeds that better exploit the potential of the microbiome. One research area therefore maps the genome of the microbiome and host animals. A second work area focuses on the interrelationship between host animal and microbiome genomes, and a third addresses the potential for microbiome-based breeding approaches.
