The interactions between animals and the microorganisms that colonize their digestive tracts are of great importance for the characteristics of farm animals. So far, however, little is known about these interactions. With the "Hohenheim Center for Livestock Microbiome Research (HoLMiR)," scientists at the University of Hohenheim from
10 research groups and, in future, 3 junior research groups will work across disciplines to close these gaps in knowledge. More 

The importance of this research was underlined by the joint science conference of the federal and state governments (GWK), which approved funding for HoLMiR as a center of supra-regional importance according to Art. 91b GG. A total of 52 million euros was granted for a new research building and large-scale equipment in June 2018.

The research infrastructure built with these funds will result in a research center for systematic and institutionally anchored microbiome research with farm animals that is unique in Germany.
